From the Proposal to the Honeymoon
Design Your Own Wedding Ring
You're now ready to choose a wedding ring. No doubt you've seen the words "build a wedding ring" or "design a wedding ring" and have been slightly intimidated. You may not be a jewelry maker or artistic designer, but that doesn't mean you can't assist in the designing or building of your own wedding ring. It just means that, with the assistance of a designer and jeweler, you are going to come up with a wedding ring that is unique to the two of you. What could be more special than that?

Custom made wedding rings can be expensive but if you shop around, you can find reasonably priced rings. In fact, a lot of retail stores are now offering custom-designed wedding rings. The couple will be the one to choose the ring's final design and appearance. You can even get bonuses like free cleaning.

There are several reasons why a lot of couples may prefer custom rings:

  • Those who are allergic to certain metals can choose a ring that will not trigger skin reactions.
  • Your ring will be unique; no one else will have the same ring. It will be an expression of your uniqueness, both individually and as a couple.
  • Custom-made engagement rings may be more durable than some mass-produced rings.
  • Depending on your designer, designing your own engagement ring and having it custom-made may actually be cheaper than buying an expensive ring by a famous designer.
Tips for Designing Your Own Engagement Ring

  • Have a rough sketch on paper of your ring's design and give it to the designer. You do want input from the designer, but you also want the designer to keep your original idea fairly intact. It helps, then, for the designer to always have your design in front of him or her.
  • Before choosing a designer, ask for samples of his or her work. Talk to the designer first, so you know if you can work with him. Make sure the designer listens to you and doesn't try to steer you into something totally different or more expensive.
  • It helps to know ahead of time what metals and gems you wish the designer to use. Again, you can ask for input, but you know your budget and tastes better than the designer does.
  • Make sure that the wedding ring is covered by insurance so that in case it gets lost, it can be immediately replaced. This is particularly important if you order the ring online and have it sent to you. If it's an online purchase, make sure the designer has the ring photocopied before it is sent to you.
  • Allow plenty of time between taking the idea to the designer and the date you need it. It takes time to custom design and create a ring. Don't expect it overnight.
